On the road again, we drove along the Alaska Hwy, dipping slightly into BC at one point and crossing the Continental Divide, again separating the west-flowing and east-flowing rivers. An interesting roadside stop was a view of the Lost Landscape of Quesnellia - formerly volcanic islands, crushed against the North American continental plate. The islands have long since eroded but we can see the granite 'roots' and the angular spikes of an ancient magma chamber....

Leaving Dease Lake, we continued up Hwy 37 until we crossed the border into Yukon. The last 30 km or so, we were driving through hectares of burnt trees - apparently from a couple of fires in the past few years. What a sight - nothing but bare, scorched trunks. Once into Yukon, we headed east on the Alaska Hwy to Watson Lake where we spent two nights. Leaving Stewart, we stopped to admire the Bear Glacier and take more photos, then drove back to join Hwy 37 at Meziadin Junction. Lunch there was interesting - the restaurant/cookhouse had rows of bunkhouse trailers out back and was definitely cookhouse décor inside. Good food, though! Monday morning (Aug 24/15), we left the Hazelton area and turned north on Hwy 37 - today's objective Stewart BC and Hyder Alaska. We stopped briefly in the Gityanow Historic Village and checked out the totem poles. Pretty impressive! Moving on, we traveled north to Meziadin Junction where we turned west on Hwy 37A - ending the day in Stewart BC. Along the way, we saw a bear cub (who disappeared too fast to snap his photo) and a mama bear and cub (got them!) ...

Gitanyow-Kitwancool Historic Village At Kitwanga, we made the turn towards Yukon and Alaska on Hwy 37. A short distance in, we stopped to see the totems at the Gitanyow-Kitwancool Historic Village. They were an incredible sight - some old, some new.
