Off to the Salton Sea today so Mr F could bag a seagull which meant driving along the San Andreas fault. A little perturbing to say the least. Happy to report the earth did not move on this occasion.
We also made a detour to a remote gas station so Mr F could have a go at spotting a Rufous-backed Robin. As attractive birding sites go, this place didn't rate too highly. I've spent time twiddle my thumbs in worst places though and this one did have one redeeming feature: a rather good tat shop and cafe. After purchasing 2 iced lattes-to-go and a "Beware! Extremely perky dog!" sign, I had to go back in to get Mr F a little something extra. The robin had not appeared so it took a triple chocolate snickers bar to bring his smile back.
Now if you thought a gas station was a bad holiday location, you should go visit our next stop: Salton City. My father would describe it as "a pimple on the arse end of progress" and that's being way too kind in my opinion. Just don't bother visiting - not that any of you normal people would, but I wanted to say it just in case.
Our final port of call for the day, Westmoreland, wasn't a great deal better either. Its redeeming feature: a 24hr donut shop. And we had to drive 18 miles to find a Denny's for dinner. Roll on tomorrow.
