We drove from Picton around the Malborough Sounds. We have been offered Summer jobs in a resort up there. Its about 30kms away from Picton - the nearest town, but it takes around 2 hours to drive up there. The roads are so twisty & winding & quite hairy at times in a campervan. The quickest way to get to the resort we found out was by watertaxi - so we start on Monday 14th. Need to top up the funds a bit. Its only part time to start with, then in October it becomes full time until Feb or March. Anyway, drove through Blenheim which is a biggie on wines - vineyards everywhere. Stopped there the night, but stopped right near the train track so kept getting woken up! When will we learn? Next stop was Kaikoura for lunch the next day - will go back when the weather gets a bit warmer for some whale watching & crayfish eating!! Drove all the way down to Christchurch that day & stopped in a lovely camp site - will be there for tonight too. We wanted to move from a muddy site to a hard-standing site today, so we asked when most people had left this morning & were given a different site to go to. Unfortunately when Pete tried to reverse out the site we soon realised the van was not going anywhere!! We had to get a tractor to come & pull us out. Luckily they managed to do so & we moved to a hardstanding with much delight in the knowledge we could return the van to the deport tomorrow clean & not muddy. Have booked a bus back to Picton tomorrow - will stay the night in a hostel or motel & then up the Portage resort. If it doesn't work out there we will probably find ourselves picking grapes or kiwi fruit soon! So watch this space!
