We spent this morning at the Van Gogh Museum. It's lovely and is organised by the stages of his life. He only was an artist for the last 10 years of his life, but he was so prolific. In my next life I'd like to be an artistic genius, but as most of them wind up committing suicide, maybe not.
Peter and I split up in the afternoon - he went off to the Maritime Museum and I wandered the shopping area Nine Little Streets and more of the Jordaan neighbourhood. I didn't buy anything other than cheese, but the cheese shops are impossible to resist. We made a dinner tonight of the beautiful cheese I bought, along with some jambon (cured thinly-sliced ham) and matze crackers. It was so good, and we're in need of a break from eating out so much.
It's hard to keep track of all the intersting things we see on a daily basis. I saw a man shopping with his dog, and the dog had his wallet in his mouth. I so wish I could capture all the bikes here, and how families manage to transport children of all ages on them. I saw a Mum with a 3-year old girl on a mini-tandem in front of her - it was built on a long chopper-like handle/frame. Kids sit on the front, stand on the back, all not worrying about helmuts in busy traffic. People smoke and ride, text and ride, and somehow in all the chaos, nobody crashes.
This evening we went for another walk through the Red Light district. At first we thought all the working girls were as big as the woman depicted in Van Gogh's 'Woman Digging' (above), but we eventually saw some that weighed less than Peter does. I respect their right to earn money however they want, but standing in a doorway would still would be a tough gig.
