We had originally planned to go to Red Lodge, Montana last night and spend the night at the summer home of Rachel and Roger Bowman, swimming friends of Paige's from Sarasota. However, as we had started back east a day late already, we decided to stay on the main trail. Rachel and her son Graham were coming to pick her mother up at the Billings airport later in the day, they were kind enough to meet us for breakfast and bring us some important mail that had been sent to her house. (Our license plate was expiring before we got back, so Jimmy had forwarded us the new one to Rachel's house). After swapping swimming stories and Sarasota elementary school stories for a while, we resumed our trip. (I must say the most interesting story to me, especially as a non-swimmer, was of Rachel swimming at the YMCA National Championships with an orthopedic boot on one foot that had a torn ligament.)
We got back on Interstate 90 again! Many more miles and hours of Montana, and then back into Wyoming. We could tell we were on the eastern side of the Continental Divide as the hills were more rolling. Still very little sign of life, except for the fencing and poles. It literally looks like a green ocean stretching to the horizon. We crossed over into South Dakota in the late afternoon. We were headed for Hill City. Shortly before our destination, we stopped to see the Indian memorial, Chief Crazy Horse. There is a very large visitor center with many artifacts, works of art, and historical pictures of the western Indians. There is a beautiful sculptured model of Chief Crazy Horse on his horse; there is work being done on a huge granite mountain top to reproduce that model on a grand scale. So far, only the face of the chief is complete and you can see where his arm is extended to the horse. But there is a long way to go .to completion.
We wound on through the mountains and camped a few miles from Mount Rushmore in a seemingly nice little campground, except for a small electrical issue/argument with management. We got it straightened out and had a peaceful, well-rested evening.
