Since leaving siem Reap in Cambodia, we've been to Koh Samui, Koh Pangnan, Koh Tao and finally to where we are now in Krabi! Its been an awesome couple of weeks and we've had a great time even if it has been raining a lot with a few storms here and there!
Our arrival in Koh Samui came as a bit of a shock because we knew it was a busy island but we didn't expect it to resemble a European destination similar to a lads or girls holiday! There were a lot of shaved heads and tattos with meat-heads strutting around with no top on, gym style muscles with smirks that screamed 'check me out!' It was quite amusing to see especially since the same guys would have hookers they'd bought for the night hanging off their arm in the evening! Very surreal.
Despite this, the Chaweng area we stayed was good fun. By day we relaxed on the picturesque beach and at night we enjoyed a few drinks here and there and often stayed out till around 3! It was nice to have modern computers with good connections again and we finally got round to burning some CDs for us to upload! I know i've kept promising it but its finally possible now!
On Samui we spent our time with Cliona and Steve which made the stay more enjoyable especially as our accomodation was so nice. We hit the new ice bar together which follows the trend of other ice-bars around the world with everthing including your glass made from ice! They had a tuk-tuk sculpture as well as some other things and it was a cool thing to do on an island thats about 35-40 degrees! One evening the boys decided to check out the Muay Thai kickboxing tournament and we discovered how brutal this sport really is... We saw two kids fight, with one throwing up and collapsing from exhaustion, some knock-outs including ones from heavy body-shots and elbows to the head, loads of blood, as well as the biggest mis-match in history. One fighter was clearly superior to his opponent in every way and as he came in with an impressive flying kick the other guy attempted to block it and was knocked down with a very broken arm! We watched all of this from ringside seats and i guess you have to expect it seeing as this sport is so deeply ingrained in their culture.
The main thing we did from Samui was head over to Koh Pangnan for the Full Moon party via speed-boat. We began the night around 7 with some pre-drinking before heading over around 9 o'clock for the fun-filled night! It was awesome and we had a lot of fun with a lot of drinking, dancing and general mayhem! Steve and i managed to have a drunken sleep at different points in the night for the girls amusement and it was quite funny watching all the other people doing exactly the same! Its hard to describe the scene of approx. 10,000 people partying on a beach but i'm sure you get the idea! Around 6 we made our way back to the speed-boat for a very bumpy ride back to Samui causing a few of the other passengers problems with their stomachs! Haha! All in all, a great night!
Once we were fully recovered from the Full Moon we headed to Koh Tao for the diving. We can proudly say we are now both qualified divers after completing our Open Water course! I decided to go one step further and am now an Advanced diver but Hannah decided against this mainly because of the stormy seas! Yes thats right, it was stormy for a lot of the time we were there which made our boat rides out to sea an interesting experience! We saw loads of aquatic life including barracuda, sting-rays and scary trigger fish that chase you if you piss them off which some other people managed to do and earn themselves a few bites here and there! Also included was Nimo and his other tropical friends. On my night dive with the advanced course i was lucky enough to see a sea-turtle amongst other things and it was amazing seeing what comes out at night even if you're swimming around in pitch black with just your torch for comfort! But i'd definately recommend it.
Other than the diving we enjoyed a BBQ every night and met a cool bunch of people we had some fun nigths with. Our group consisted of two Mexicans, one Brazilian, two Germans, one Irish and us so quite a mix! We went to the lady-boy show which was very amusing and a good laugh as well as a few nights at the Lotus bar which is easily the biggest attraction for travellers there beside the diving. a cool beach-side bar with fire throwers, good music etc etc! the island was very picturesque and a good place to have moved onto from Samui.
And so here we are now in Krabi staying in a very nice bungalow village right beside the beach! We're planning to visit Koh Lanta and Phi Phi soon before heading back up to Bangkok for our flight to New Zealnd! Exciting! Expect to hear from us up in Bangkok to fill you in on what we get up to in our last bit of Thailand!
Love to all! x
