Once again, we've been up to loads since Nha Trang in Vietnam! We've passed through the chilled out beach resort of Mui Ne, then onto Saigon before making our way across to Cambodia to Phnom Penh and then up to where we are now Siem Reap!
Mui Ne was really cool with loads of nice restaurants and a lovely beach with crystal clear warm waters. We decided we wouldn't do any of the tours here to the local white, red and yellow sand dunes or the fairy stream simply because we wanted our lie-ins! However, a truly memorable experience was hiring a moped and taking ourselves round the area... It was loads of fun especially because driving a moped was a first for me and with Hannah on the back it was quite amusing! As we drove around through sunset we were flagged down by a bunch of loacl kids... and before we knew it we had them climbing on-board and telling us they could take us sledging down the red sand dunes even though it was early evening! We could do little to persuade them otherwise and so we headed off on our moped with a tiny ten-year old sitting in front of me and another one sitting behind Hannah so 4 of us on one tiny moped! 'was crapping myself at this responsibility of having two small kids on a bike i had next to no experience on! Paul and Helen were in the same situation as us and so we all made our way to the dunes for some sand surfing!
It turned out to be incredible fun and the kids were so sweet! Definately a unique tavelling experience that i doubt we will be able to share with many other travellers! Sliding down sand dunes on a piece of plastic at night with a crew of small kids was quite unlike anything you're ever likely to experience at home! This experience and the beach summed up Mui Ne and we made our way to Saigon after three days there...
Saigon turned out to be one of the friendlier places in Vietnam and one of our favourites. However, we didn't get to spend much time here and the main thing we did were the Chi Cu tunnels used by the Vietcong in the Vietnam war and the shooting range! The tunnels were a really interesting experience as we were shown hidden entrances, booby-traps, tunneling methods as well as crawling through the incredibly small tunnels ourselves! Not for the claustrophobic!
We saw the remnants of an American tank, various bomb craters and finally the shooting range where Hannah and i shot an AK47 and i also got the fire an M30 mcahine gun! It was very loud but very cool and the boys in particular loved it! Other than this we had a good night out in Saigon and walked around the city at night and got to see a local rock band who were surprisingly good with amazing singers!
As for Cambodia, we arrived in Phnom Penh and were struck by the poverty of the people here who seemed far worse off than in the other south-east Asian countries. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the people who were awesome, especially considering the recent history of the country and its violent past. We had an amazing driver who chaffeured us around all day where we visited another shooting range with Hannah shooting a 9mm pistol an myself taking on a light-support machine gun - Russian PKMT - which was very cool. I even shot my own hoody which is now ridden with bullet holes but looks very stylish even if mum won't think so! Shortly after this we moved on to the killing fields of the Pol Pot regime and the S21 prison in an old high-school. Both were very moving experiences and probably overshadowed the experience of Hiroshima! Its impossible to convey what we saw and felt here and one cannot help but feel incredibly sorry for the Cambodian people and what they've been through with the genocide more barbaric than the Holocaust! Once we had visited the historic sites we concluded the day by visitng the Royal Palace.
After Phnom Penh we headed to Siem Reap which is a beautiful place and the Ankor temples are astounding. We saw a whole bunch of them including the one in the Tomb Raider film and it was a very Indiana Jones like place and well worth a trip to Cambodia just for this! We were lucky enough to be here for the Khmer new year (Cambodian new year) and we celebrated with a massive family and the locals in an alcohol fuelled party! We drank with the local police chief and variosu others who seemed to love the 'bottoms up' way of drinking whisky and beers with us! Everyone seemed to get really involved in this three-day celebrtion so our time here has been a lot of fun! Other than this we just went swimming and checked out the markets as the heat made it difficult to do much else! We'll upload the pictures when we get to a good computers so we apologise again for the delays!
Love to all and keep us updated on what you're all up to on facebook or here so we're in contact! Drew and Hannah x
