After a wonderful couple of days with John and Kerry on the farm, it was time to head around 190 km north east to Kyogle. We thought Kyogle was a really nice town with a lovely park at the Tourist Info. Center. We overnighted at Sheepstation Creek Campground. Again $6 pppn. We planned on doing a couple of walks there but the weather wasn’t real kind - I guess it was a rainforest - but we were sooks and decided against it. It’s hard to travel with wet clothes, not having the luxury to being able to dry them. Anyway, that’s our excuse and we’re sticking to it!
The next afternoon we drove 14km up the road, through the National Park, to The Pinnacle Lookout. The road was narrow, slippery and a bit scary at times. It was a slow old run but lucky that our little vehicle was under the 7 metre limit allowed to travel there. The Lookout is only 200 metres from the car park and looks out over the volcanic crater and Mount Warning. The view was spectacular but the wind would blow a dog off the chain. We free camped in the car park that night that was miles from anyone and anywhere because David wanted to see the morning sun hit Mount Warning. With the alarm set for 5.45 am, we snuggled down with the rain putting us to sleep. The next morning off we set again, the 200 metres to be greeted by the heaviest, thickest cloud and fog. There was a brief - very brief - moment when the clouds parted to let the sun through. Then it was off back to Kyogle for a good country brekkie.and then head east towards the coast. A brief stop at Nimbin (14 km off the main highway). An interesting place - the hippies arrived in the 60’s or 70’s and never left. I don’t think most have seen a shower or hair brush since.
There were some lovely views on the way of the other side of Mount Warning, funnily enough, not in cloud.
Three nights at Kingscliff in an expensive caravan park - $65 pn - but so worth it. I feel like I’ve been in cloud and fog for weeks. So nice to hear the ocean again and have a blue, clear sky. It’s right on the beach with cafes and shops on the other side of the road. So many nice shops but with limited storage, there was not much point in shopping.
Off tomorrow to visit brother Ian, Tamara and Chantelle.
