Our Global Gallivants
The hotel here is very accommodating when it comes to arranging tours. You can wait until the morning of the tour and then check the weather and how you're feeling, and then tell them you want to go. They have their own long boats and also drivers on staff ready to go. Although the reason we came to Phi Phi Island was for the snorkelling, we have both been sick and didn't want to get sicker by spending the day in the water. I did a test run yesterday in front of the hotel to see if I would be in trouble in I coughed while I was snorkelling. Turns out it's not a problem as long as you keep your mouth on the snorkel.
As soon as we finished breakfast, we booked a half day private snorkelling tour and left at 9:30. We both took a single bonine chewable tablet to prevent sea sickness. We started snorkelling at Maya Bay. It was not that impressive-their wasn't a lot of living coral and not that many fish. We didn't think there were too many boats either. We stayed there for 1 hour and then moved on to the next stop.
The second stop was in a beautiful spot, but it was for swimming only, no snorkelling allowed. It seemed like a risky situation because there were so many boats in this small area and so many people in the water. We decided we didn't want to swim, we can do that in front of the hotel.
We moved on to the final spot, shark point. We weren't interested in swimming with sharks either, but we did want to snorkel. The sharks here are black tip sharks, not interested in snorkellers for lunch. The water was quite rough, and we were really bobbing around. It turns out that it is close enough to our hotel that we could have walked over and swam out to this area. As soon as we got in the water, there were plenty of fish coming over to us. Dave brought along a water bottle with bread and sea water in it and periodically squirted some of that into the water. The fish just went crazy for it. We had 45 minutes at this stop and it really went by quickly. Dave swam off to the boT when it was time to go, climbed on board and then straight to the opposite side of the boat to throw up. I guess next time 2 Bonine's are in order. When I got on the boat, I was also a little disoriented and uncomfortable for the first few minutes and then it passed. I sunburned my butt cheeks. I need to buy some kind of swimming shorts for the future.
We sat on the beach to watch the sunset.
We had dinner at the restaurant here and it was good.
