Our Global Gallivants
Went to bed at about 12:30 and actually had a pretty decent sleep last night. I didn't really feel the need to have a nap, but we went back to the apartment to rest before going to meet Sensei Adrienne and Rob and Sensei Nakamura for Chinese dinner. We don't have internet here, the building can't accommodate it, so blogging will be spotty. We met Rob in the morning and did some wandering around before ending up at the vending machine restaurant. They now have an English legend on the wall, so you actually have an idea what you are ordering. You chose what you want to eat from this wall mounted menu. Put your money in the vending machine and punch in the item number, A45, for example and it spits out a ticket. You take your ticket, go and sit in your booth, and place it on the ledge beside your table. This is a galley way from the kitchen. The cook retrieves the ticket, cooks up your meal and brings it out to you. It is actually a pretty clever idea because no money changes hands and they employ less staff. Food prices reflect that. My lunch of pork cutlet and egg on a big bowl of rice was ¥500, so about $6 CAD. Rob had fried chicken. About 8 pieces and a little salad for ¥300. After we ate, we walked to the Kokusai dori (international street) and bought a doughnut. The Japanese doughnut is very similar to a Chinese doughnut that we like. Several flavours, white sugar, brown sugar (Dave's) choice, black sesame (my choice) and mango. It is definitely hot and humid here. Sweat was just pouring off us. That is going to be an issue for training, for sure. Constantly drinking water. Went to a shopping mall to look at luggage. The suitcase Dave likes is on sale and we can also buy tax free on purchases over ¥5000, but we didn't have our passport, so will need to return tomorrow. We had Chinese food for dinner and then went to the dojo bar for drinks. I don't think I will do that again-3 beer and I spent the night going pee. On the walk home, we ran into a couple of girls from Germany. One of them was the stewardess from Hamburg that was my training partner in Sicily! It is definitely a small world. It was a pretty good first day.
