On the road again
After our good stay in smelly town (the hostel was really good but the other people were as open as a sea shell... that is closed (Oscar is such a gifted poet)), we made our way to the "Waitomo Caves" where we've booked a combo package. It included "abseiling", a visit to the "Glowworm Caves" and some climbing.
We belonged to a group of six adventurers who were eager to explore the underground with our cool guide Rudy. After we were dressed in a wetsuit, white boots and a ridiculous pair of trousers (Dominics looked like the trousers of MC Hammer), we faced our first task: 27 metres of abseiling into the caves. Even though it was totally secure, we still were a bit nervous while dangling in the air. Rudy seemed very happy everytime he splashed us while abseiling with a water hose.
We stayed down in the caves for about 3,5 hours with the water sometimes up to our knees and sometimes uo to our shoulders. It was a really great experience to walk (or float on tires) through the huge dave complex. The best moment was when we all were sitting on the rocks, eating our chocolate bar, drinking a cup of a warm, sweet, fruity liquid. It was pitch black and the only sound we heard was the murmering of the water and the only thing we saw were the light of a thousand shining stars (glowworms) on the ceiling.
After climbing up again to the surface, we changed our clothes, said goodbye to everyone and drove to our hostel. The hostel was surrounded by fields and trees but the inside was no pleasant sight. The kitchen was really filthy with sinks filled with dirty dishes. At least we met two swiss guys (Dani and Michi) and spent the evening talking with them in that beautiful language. :)
There were 5 beds in our room, so we thought that the odds of having a snorring person in one of the other beds were rather low... But there he was. Probably the king of snorring or even the inventor of it. It soon became clear to us that he was a master snorrer. It was incredibly loud and even 5 seconds after he fell asleep again, he immediately went back to work. The concerto included the master of snorring, his apprentice (who was lying on one of the beds) and a rooster who had some solo parts here and there (from 5 am to 10 am). Oscars deepest wish was to silent the rooster with any means necessary. It was such a horrible, long, horrible night.
As soon as we said farewell to the swiss lads, we hopped into our car and drove off as fast as we could because we didn't want to spend any minute longer in that nasty hostel. Taupo was our next destination. We took a detour up to "Ruapuke Beach" which is not like any other beach in the world: the sand is completely black. Seeing the waves rolling toward the black beach with no person in sight was simply amazing. The sand was sooo smooth but could get really hot in the sun.
