After approximatly 30 hours filled with eating, sitting, watching films and trying to sleep, we finally arrived in Auckland. It may sound easy but there were some difficulties. The biggest was trying to sleep while in a sitting possition without getting your neck sore. We'll try to master this skill on our flight back home. The second challange was to eat with your arms close to your body, so that you won't torture your neighboor's arms with your elbows.
On our flight from Melbourne to Auckland was a real Kiwi sitting next to us. It was a really nice guy, but he had the worst mouth breath ever. Even when he was talking to a guy sitting opposite of us, the smell was almost deadly. Also he was speaking with such a strong New-Zealand accent, that we often just nodded and smiled while having no clue of what he was telling us about. Now and then he looked at us without saying anything and as soon as we realized he had asked us a question we sad "What?". It was one of the deepest and most philosophic conversations we've had so far.
When we left the airport in Auckland, we hopped on the bus which brought us into the city. We checked into our 10-bed room and tried to stay awake until 8 o'clock so that we can adjust to the rythm and lose our jetlag. We went exploring the city for a while and we were astonished about the amount of asian people that live in Auckland. It feels like a third of every person that passes by is asian. Even though there is quite a lot of traffic going on on queens street there is a relaxed atmosphere in the city. People walk around with their flip-flops, many street musicians fill the streets with their music and everyone seems really friendly.
Today we went on our second tour in the city. It included a trip up the Sky Tower in the center of the city with a nice and very high up view (ca. 200 metres). Also we went to the Museum were we learned more about the Maui history, quiet interesting people.
Tomorrow we will get our rental car and begin driving up north of Auckland and see how New Zealand locks like outside of a city.
As soon as we have more news and acces to a computer with internet connection we'll be writing again.
