Ol n' Ben around the world
After a quiet and sleepy flight thanks to the comfortable seats, we arrived at Keflavik airport around 9:30 under clear skies and shinning sun.
As planned, we bought two return tickets to Blue Lagoon with Reykjavik Excursions : http://www.re.is/DayTours/BlueLagoon/
It is a 20 minute drive by bus to go to Blue Lagoon. We were immediately immersed in the icelandic amazing landscapes as the road crossed several lava fields. Upon arrival at Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik Excursions offered to leave our luggage in a private shelter at the entrance of the lagoon for free. We only took our swimsuits and made a tour around the amazing blue pools before entering the lagoon.
Due to our early arrival, there was no line to enter the lagoon and we could reach the lockers very fast. The place is very modern and clean. As they do not add any chemical product into the lagoon, it is mandatory for every people to take a shower (naked) before entering it.
The water in Blue Lagoon is very warm and its color amazingly blue, with a milky aspect due to white silica. This silica is available for free in small baskets around the lagoon and you can put it on your face to enjoy its benefits on your skin.
We also enjoyed the sauna and steamed baths, and went back to the changing rooms after a 2 hour stay. We had lunch in the Blue Lagoon café. While eating, we could see that a huge line had grown to enter the site and we thus understood that the overcrowded reputation of the place was not a lie. We were definitely lucky to arrive early in the morning.
We then used our return ticket to go to Reykjavik. It is a 1 hour drive by bus, and the driver was kind enough to drop us in front of our guesthouse downtown Reykjavik at 2:15 pm. We checked in and left our luggage in the room. The rest of the group was not expected before 6 pm so we decided to go and visit the city.
We started with Harpa Concert Hall, a brand new and modern building hosting the opera of Reykjavik.
Then we went to the "old city", picked up information at the tourist center, walked to the pond, and entered several museums : National Art Gallery, National Museum of Iceland. We also entered the National and University Library.
Then we walked to the big church dominating the city : Hallgrimskirkja. Unfortunately we could not enter the church as a concert was taking place.
We then took Skolavördustigur street with its pretty colored houses and made our way back to Domus guesthouse where we met the rest of the group and our guide, Alex.
He made a quick briefing of the upcoming 2 week tour around the island, and then we could enjoy the evening as we wished. As far as we were concerned, we decided to have a nice meal in Kolabrautin restaurant, which serves gourmet cuisine ("Icelandic Produce. Mediterranean Traditions" as they say) in front of the sunset. Magic moment.
