Wake up at 7:45 under grey skies. But no rain contrary to forecast.
After breakfast, we drive to the region of Krafla volcano. We pass by a huge geothermic plant before arriving to the volcano. We decide to go and walk to the viti, the lake inside the crater, very similar to the one saw in Askja even if this one is smaller.



















We then walk to the parking lot where the day hike trail starts, while A. and P. bring one of the cars to the end of the trail. We finally leave the parking lot around 11am and the sky is still grey. The beginning of the trail is very busy: many tourists come here to walk in the middle of lava fields - the last one occurred in 1964. There are many fumaroles around us.
According to Icelandic people, this place is supposed to be where Iceland was born, out of the rift.






















































When most of tourists wander around the fumaroles and sulfatares before going back to their buses, we keep walking on the 14 km long trail heading to Myvatn lake. The scenery is amazing as it seems like we are walking on another planet and discovering a new world made of rocks.
We stop around noon to have lunch under lava tunnels. Those ones are very impressive and were made by two lava flows moving at two different speeds.






































The end of the trail is flatter and offers a nice view above Lake Myvatn. We arrive at the campground around 5pm. We decide to go one more time to Myvatn Nature Baths with some other people from the group. The lagoon is filled with french people... We enjoy warm waters and sauna before coming back for dinner. Maud and Olivier, who drove Chuck (the second defender) to Myvatn and will drive the Land Cruiser back to Reykjavik, share dinner with us. We go to bed around 10pm for our last night in the Myvatn region.
