So although Tina and I are only in Mexico, it seems that wherever we have gone adventure has followed. We ended our stay in Puebla/Cholula with a great fiesta…drank a lot and went out...and the night ended up being quite random (at one point everyone got separated and I ended up hanging out with my new and random friend Cedric). We had a great time: speed walking almost all the way to Puebla from Cholula…catching a cab home to Sarah-Eve's house and since the huge gates of her apartment building were locked and no one was coming to open them up…I ended up climbing the sketchy gates (with jagged spikes at the top) in my little orange dress…and if that wasn't bad enough (with the cab driver and Cedric watching to make sure I got over all right) my undies ended up getting caught on the gate!Luckily, I managed awkwardly (very awkwardly) to free myself. The next day we made a nice big brunch and hung out with old and new friends for one last time before we went off to Puerto Escondido. Now Puerto Escondido is a beautiful place…but there is definitely a lot of partying that goes on there. We met a bunch of people at the youth hostel and a group of us kind of became a little family. We played drinking games, went to the beach during very stormy weather (where Tina and I tried to go fishing…to no avail…and saw some pretty huge manta rays up close…did somersaults in the sand…and handstands and generally just had a great time). The next night in Puerto Escondido, something very similar happened, but instead we ended up going to our friend Rafael's place on the beach. Now, some of us passed out on the beach, while Tina and Rob stayed up all night playing in the ocean, talking and generally just being crazy and not sleeping. But just a word of advice: sleeping on the beech in Puerto Escondido is NOT A GOOD IDEA.I woke up in the morning with a runny nose…and to my great surprise my bag had gotten stolen! In the bag was a bit of money and my camera…which kind of sucks to not have but life goes on!It's just kind of eerie that someone was able to sneak up while I (and others) were fast asleep….and when Tina and Rob were close by and awake all night! Now some creep has my camera (Tina and I hope he isn't watching pictures of us…and that he just deleted them!).Anyhow, the next day…when we all walked the long stretch of beach back to the hostel (we all looked pretty rough… and we were quite a diverse group: a tall giant of a man, our German friend Jacob; our short funny friend from Israel, Guy; Rochelle and Rob from Australia and Tina and I.It probably looked like the ultimate walk of shame).Needless to say, we decided to leave Puerto Escondido and go to Mazunte, a smaller beach town about an hour south. We went with our new found friend, Rafael…and although we were only supposed to stay there a day or two, Mazunte sucked us in for about four. There we went on a boat tour were we saw dolphins and got to swim with sea turtles…and went on a crazy hike (where there was lots of drinking involved) up a quasi cliff called "La Punta" where we watched the sunset and the ocean and ate some delicious shrimp burgers. The trek down in the dark was definitely interesting…but luckily we had our awesome headlamps (thanks Widge and Pete!).Unfortunately, later on that night Tina caught some sort of stomach bug (we do not blame the alcohol!) and spent the rest of the night puking, while Rafael and I just finished off a huge (disgusting, warm and flat) bottle of rum and coke. What was really amazing is that we had befriended one of the street dogs (which I named Rocky) and she followed us for the whole crazy adventure! When we ate our food at the top we decided that she definitely deserved a lot of it (after the trials she had endured…and she was also looking quite bony). The next day…Tina and I go on the boat tour (with the dolphins, turtles, and where we also got to do some fun snorkelling) we take a much needed nap, which turned into us passed out in the hammocks beside our tent, sleeping for five hours, while the world went on around us.When we finally wake from our slumber (with hammock marks all over us and eaten alive from the bugs) we start walking down the beach to get some food and who do we see but Rob!I guess he just couldn't resist joining us.That night we take it very easy (a rare occurrence) and drink wine and play cards. The next day we all walk down the beach and make some delicious coffee with our glorious percolator and write in our journals (this is where Rob learned the expression "brain fart" and was bewildered…all very exciting).Tina and I had already gone to the turtle museum (with another random friend whom we only knew as "bebe Tortuga") so we packed our stuff while Rob went to the turtle museum. Then we all went to the crocodile reserve at Ventanilla! This was definitely a good time…and on our walk over to the crocodile reserve…who do we find but Rocky!Once again, Rocky follows us to the crocodile reserve.Once we get there, the guy giving the tour says it is unsafe for the dog…but we figure she'll stay close to us and all will be well. Before our long hot journey we jump in the ocean to cool down…and then we're off!Once we get to the lagoon though, Rocky refuses to follow us in the boat.So we start leaving…and to our great fear she is precariously close to the water of the crocodile lagoon. We try yelling at her to get her not to follow us (she's yelping and whining all the while and making quite a bit of noise)…and the next thing we see, a crocodile hears her yelping, zones in on her, and swims right towards her.The next thing we hear is one final yelp and we are horrified.Everyone is laughing, and although the situation is funny in a sinister kind of way, the weight of Rocky's death starts to make me feel horribly sad.Everyone is joking around, and I just cry silently at the front of the boat (with my sunglasses on so that no one can see, I know, kind of pathetic).Although the rest of what we see is amazing (baby crocodiles, various animals that have been poached or captured, but saved by the efforts of the reserve) I can't help but be kind of depressed about the death of Rocky.Tina reassures me and tells me that death by crocodile beats death by starvation, but I still can't help but feel responsible for the death of Rocky, a dog that loved us and followed us trustingly, and died a horrible death. We stop on an island in the lagoon and drink from some coconuts and eat some delicious roasted coconuts. Then we go back. We're all walking down the long road (Rob, Tina, and a guy from Carolina) when we hear a truck coming down. Now Rob has really bad crotch chaffing so he tells us to put out our thumbs and we get a ride! When we get to the main road we see some people waiting for the colectivo (a type of bus, which consists of seats in the back of a pickup truck, that goes back to Mazunte) and who do we see with them?????ROCKY!!!!!!!We are all so happy to see her and to see that she is still alive! We were convinced that the crocodile had eaten her…but when it came down to crocodile and dog…the dog prevailed! The guy who's giving us a ride is definitely sketchy, but very nice.We get Rocky to follow us and she does….every time the man is talking to me…he kind of starts to swerve off the road but we finally make it to Mazunte in one piece! And with Rocky!Life is good and once we get back to the beach we all go for a swim.I enquire at the nearby restaurants to see if there are any fish parts (to give to Rocky) but next thing I know dogs are chasing her and Rocky is gone to the other side of the beach: but we're all happy because Rocky is alive and not eaten by a crocodile.Viva Rocky!Anyways, the three of us (by this time we have convinced Rob to come with us to Palenque) head off to take a colectivo (which is stuffed but lots of fun) to Pochutla, a nearby town. From there we take a bus to San Cristobal de las Casas (there is no direct bus to Palenque) and today we are alive and well in San Cristobal de las Casas!Tomorrow it's onwards to Palenque to stay in the jungle and see the Mayan Ruins. And then after that…it's all new for me because we're going to Tikal in Guatemala!Anyways, I'm writing all this from a very small internet café in San Cristobal…and the speed is not very good, and we had a bit of a crisis with the downloading of pictures: it takes about half an hour per picture so we've decided to try our luck elsewhere, at another internet café.We hope everyone is well…we're doing great and still almost pee ourselves laughing every day!Lots of love,Ode and Tina
