At 8am Monday morning we took a 6 hour bus from Cusco to Puno. Arriving at yet another top class hotel we had a couple of hours to sort our selves out before dinner.... Guinea pig! About 5 of the group tried it, it came out whole and got taken away to be cut up. It tasted like the brown part of a chicken/ duck but wasnt enough meat to fill up the guys (Jon went on to order a double cheeseburger afterwards). We all went to a rock and reggae bar after dinner (Positive bar) which had really cool decor but Lil Wayne isnt really reggae!
Our tour of Lake Titicaca started with bici-taxis (the same idea as tuc tucs but with bikes) which took us to the port. We then took a boat for half an hour to arrive at the floating islands where we were given a tour and shown how they are made. There were 5 different families and approximatey 1000 people living there. They even had a school on one of the islands, but the population is slowly declining as the children are moving out to live in Puno. The islands were incrediby soft to walk on as they are made from reeds, as were the houses and boats. It was like seeing part of a made up world, except tourism has become such a huge part of daily life now on the islands that the locals rely on it for their income. We had a ride in their version of a Mercedes Benz (a reed boat for tourists) around the other houses before continuing in our big boat to the main island of Taquile.
The main island was beautiful and you could see how stunningly clear and blue the lake water was. There was a religious celebration going on which meant a lot of the locals were dressed up and dancing in brightly coloured clothes and playing what must have been traditional tunes (it sounded more like squeaking to us). Lunch was delicious fresh trout from the lake. Mmmmmm.
We headed back to Puno for our last meal with the group - they are heading back to Lima and we are continuing our own travels, starting with Arequipa. We watched traditional local dance at dinner which we thought resembled morris dancing, with shouts and sticks and bells.
