Noyelles Travels
Monday 23rd November
Off again, this time to Naples on the south west coast, about 3.5 hours on another dual carriageway but this time there were road works for quite long runs. We arrived at about 1pm & caught up with Robina, the daughter of the couple who introduced us ain Melbourne in 1970. It was great to see her in her waterside home on a cut leading to the Gulf of Mexico & also to catch up with Jerry & the kids who we had entertained a few years ago in Perth. We were admiring their jetty when a pod of dolphins started playing a few yards away. Apparently they, along with manatees, are seen in the creek reasonably frequently. We all went out for lunch down to the original part of Naples, built in the 1920s & saw the boats in the marina.
Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the US & the cars reflect this. It has the same slightly unreal feel of the Villages in that it is all so new & is expanding at an incredible rate. It was great to talk to them & to hear of their life in Florida, which certainly has a very benign climate for much of the year.
We talked until quite late as they were off the next day.
Tuesday 24th November
Woke up quite late & d*** went with Jerry to take Alia, their 13 year old daughter, for a riding lesson.
On their return they packed the car & left with the 3 children to hire a Grand Banks boat for the next 4 days to sail in between the island reefs further north. We are staying on in the house until Thursday when we drop the car in Miami & fly to Colombia.
Jane caught up with the blog & d*** with other things. Then we visited a local supermarket to pick up some food etc.& generally had a very lazy day.
Wednesday 25th November
Got up late & went looking for the pier but found all the local parking was metered so only glanced at a very ordinary pier before going off to main street for a free park & a couple of expensive coffees while we watched the well heeled drive by in their Mercs', BMW’s, Jaguars & a host of expensive cars & SRVs.
Returned to the house & lazed before eventually going to the huge mall & finding d*** a pair of reasonably priced sandals in a very odd store. Watched some TV & found an hour long programme debating whether Obama had legally made war on Isis without the assent of Congress. The adverts, particularly the drug ones, are amazing in that they include more warnings against their use than promotion & the overall impression is that if you are ill you shouldn’t take them! It certainly makes us want to keep free to air TV strong in Australia.
