Monday 10th June 10th
Another damp morning for our trip to Bern, Switzerland's & the Canton's, capital. We had booked the rail tickets on the internet & d*** had them on his phone, so off we went. At the station we arrived at the platform after one went up the steps whilst the other went up a ramp in the opposite direction. In swept the train & d*** hopped on & started walking to where Jane would have got on. As you've probably guessed, Jane was waiting for d*** to appear & not seeing him, waited on the platform.
We were both worried as d*** had the rail tickets on his phone. Luckily, we both had some credit on our phones & d*** managed to convince her to take the next train and explain to any inspector that he had the ticket at Bern. Luck was with us as no inspector appeared, so we eventually met about 20 minutes later when Jane arrived in Bern too.
Following a steadying coffee there, we explored the old town for a few hours & admired the fine cathedral. The streets are lovely & it was very pleasant even though nearly all the shops were closed for Pentecost. We watched the old clock strike midday, walked down to the river, took a lift up to the Munster and wandered back towards the station. The weather was threatening so we went for lunch & the rain poured down.
After a great lunch we returned to the central station & caught a slow train back to Thun. Having sat down, d*** looked for the rail ticket on his phone & to our mutual horror, he couldn't find it. Only the phone is 'Smart' not the operator. We cringed in fear of a ticket inspector's visit for 5 stations & eventually walked off the train & crept out of the station, with a huge sigh of relief.
The bigger fear was for our ticket to Basel on Friday, when we fly out of Switzerland, as we couldn't find that either. Back at the unit d*** found them both filed under 'Travel 2019,' so someone is looking after him, after all.
Later we walked up in the rain for an organ recital & much to our surprise the church was nearly full. The recital was mostly of music we had never heard & was very impreesive. Returning via endless steps we made our way home.
