Noyelles Travels 2017
Sunday 12th March
The ship arrived, in Auckland, on another grey & rainy day.
We were met at the gate by Jill, a second cousin of Dick, & Stephen, her husband who picked us up in their very grand Mercedes. They drove us over to Devenport, one of the oldest areas of Auckland, on a hill opposite Auckland & is the home of the New Zealand Navy. Stephen joined the NZ Navy after leaving the Royal Navy 10 years ago & they both love their life in New Zealand.
After seeing the old gun emplacements etc we left Devenport in pouring rain to drive to their home about 50km north of Auckland near Helensville. Unfortunately the engine died & we had to push it to the side of the road. Despite repeated attempts it refused to start so they called the AA & we then waited just over an hour for a repairman, who took one look & said he couldn't help.
Meanwhile Stephen climbed in the driver’s seat & started it up & off we went again in the teeming downpour. We made good progress along a freeway but just as were leaving it, it died again just as we were entering a roundabout. Again the AA were called & we awaited their arrival but in about 20 minutes a Police Car came up with all its lights flashing. This time Jill climbed in & it started again so we recommenced our journey to their home, with some trepidation.
We didn’t need to worry as it took us there without further mishaps so we arrived at about 2pm.
The house sits in 5 acres on the top of a hill with fine views & is set in a fine garden they have built. Below the house & garden they have some fields, a small orchard & a duck pond with geese, ducks & hens. They have a small flock of sheep & lambs, two goats & two dogs so their lives are pretty busy caring for everything & working as well.
Jill gave us a n excellent lunch & afterwards we wandered around the property meeting the menagerie & seeing the wide variety of plants being grown.
By this time we had to leave & we returned to Auckland in their other car via Helensville, seeing the beaches of the east coast north of the city. Finally we said farewell to Jill & Stephen at about 7.30 & went to dinner on the ship.
