Day 7, 11 July 2012, Livingstone to Lusaka with Nomad Tours - For anyone who has ever doubted it, we are now, officially, "On the Bus". Specifically a large truck with 15 other travellers on the road to Lusaka. Simultaneously touch typing and looking out the window to avoid motion sickness. We left Livingstone in Zambia an hour or so ago when our tour group picked us up this morning for a 21 day tour up to Nairobi. We are on the truck at the moment zooming past miles of browness and bush and the truck has more beats, bangs, whistles and toots than a bad orchestra - I have a sneaking suspicion we've just arrived in REAL Africa. Time (and toilets) will tell.
Updates... lunch was a sandwich at the side of the road in front of the bushes and the "toilet" was behind the bushes.
Arrival - 6 pm - Lusaka is massive - 10 million people of which 11 million are apparently in their cars during rush hour. Through the windows we were offered soft toys, rubiks cubes, sneakers, leather jackets, Rolexes and DVDs (both genuine of course) and pictures of Zambia's president. Not a lot of takers. Just finishing up at a very swish modern shopping centre where the cook and the guide are stocking up on food for the rest of the trip. Rush hour continues on the roads unabated and makes Sydney look like a walk in the park. Suspect we will sleep well tonight - most of the folk on the truck are camping passengers vs. accommodated guests like us. We are not envious of them at all.
