Day 45, 18 August 2012, Hike to High Point of Sacrifice via the secret Al-Madras route. (The hike went past cave rooms believed to be ancient classrooms or in the modern language Madrassa). Drive to Wadi Rum Desert Camp for the night - Now we're both literate, articulate and more or less capable of reading a tour itinerary. That being said, the phrase High Point of Sacrifice (not low point of sacrifice, not medium point of sacrifice) should have been a clue. Right? Really - how tough can a 3 hour walk/stroll/hike led by a Jordanian grandmother be? Turns out pretty darn tough actually. And more secret than you'd think - we walked right past the sign that said Danger - No transit through here without a guide and kept right on. The sign does not always work however. An American hiking by himself a few years ago perished on this trail. James acquitted himself admirably, completing the challenge in thongs/flip flops/jandals. First time our guide had seen that done, but unfortunately no time to call the people at the Guinness Book of Records. Us girls (hi to Jacqui and Heather) managed to look like Sex in the City Does Petra. But we did it. The panoramic views of ancient downtown Petra were worth every step. The only real surprise was that I didn't become the latest sacrifice at the High Point. The 500 step walk down via the easy unguided route had us glowing virtuously. We were looking pretty done in by the time we made it back to the hotel however. Three hours and forty minutes for a three hour hike. Not too shabby for non-hikers. We walked the last kilometre to the gate instead of riding a horse because my thighs were quivering too much to ensure I stayed on. The last hill to get back to the hotel and under the wire for the breakfast buffet used our very last bit of juice and it was a quiet crew that were driven to the Wadi Rum desert camp later that afternoon. We lay. We read. We sorted photos. We watched the sunset and blinked occasionally as proof of life. The lying down became particularly sensible after dinner as we gazed up at the milky way. James saw three satellites. I saw my first ever shooting star. We slept. The desert joined us.
