Day 115, 27 October 2012, Leaving Killarney (Killarney Peaks Guesthouse), Scenic Drive around the Ring of Kerry, on to Tralee, Limerick and finally, the official middle of nowhere - Bodyke (and the East Clare Golf Village). After a grimy, drizzly, freezing day capering about Blarney and Killarney, and a good nights sleep, this morning dawned with brilliant sunshine.... all the better to glitter off the hard, cold frost that was blanketing the countryside. Our host, with typical Irish charm, announced we'd been blessed with the weather so after breakfast we jumped in the car and promptly panicked. Aaaargh. Warning light. In the shape of a snowflake. What could that mean? Anti-freeze required. Engine frozen over? Quick reference to the car manual informed us it was for warning purposes only - red snowflake means it's below 0 degrees / 32 degrees F. Be aware. It is cold. Road might be icy. Obviously these warning lights are for the slow learning classes as there was no shadow of a doubt that it was FREEZING! Having travelled for 4 months with the minimum of warm clothes we are battling on during this last week as our winter shipment should arrive in the UK any day now. HM Customs & Excise permitting (the whole container was x-rayed for some reason which has turned an 8 week shipping time into 16 weeks). In any event, the Ring of Kerry drive was stunning. We had seen many roadsigns warning of Dancing Reindeer. And in the early hours before the traffic really got underway, as the sun was still coming up, we were blessed to have a couple of deer with massive antlers zip across the road in front of us. They might be just regular deer... but I'm not convinced. The road was ours, which is lucky, because they are truly long and winding and edged on either side by stone walls and hedges. It was all we could do to actually concentrate on the driving because the sun shining on the north Atlantic was a complete cliche - diamonds (or frost!) on blue water. We puttered through villages and discovered the hard way that the 2nd most popular form of transport in Ireland after "car" is in fact "tractor". We had a laugh after we passed one particularly slow and wide example.... coming towards us on the other side of the road was another one. Even wider. We didn't hang around long enough to see how they were going to pass each other! We drove through Limerick and King John's Castle and it seemed like a great deal of traffic after our day alone on the roads. Due to an inordinately good deal, our lodgings for the night were at a one bedroomed cottage at a Golf Village (not only out of Limerick, but out of Bodyke... the nearest blip on the map). It was even a 10 minute drive off the road once we turned off. It's a bank holiday long weekend and they seemed to have a fair few clients, never the less we were upgraded to a 2 bedroomed house and rattled around quite comfortably for the night with more room than we've had since we left home. It was a self-catering affair so we stocked up on a lamb casserole (we would say irish stew) and veges and breakfast goods and settled in for a mini-break from the travelling. Sad but true. Not being grownups sometimes need to be early to bed.
