Day 31, 4 August 2012, Cairo to Giza - Downtown Cairo, US$27/night including breakfast & wifi... Giza, The Oasis Hotel, US$180/night... Yup, the ridiculous to the sublime via one of Egypt's new, swish, black & white metered taxis. Now it wasn't the near punchup with an opposing cabbie when we jumped in and yelled Yella Yella! (go go!), it wasn't the almost complete lack of English - once he figured out we were heading to Giza, we got on the right road and he hit the gas. It wasn't the swerving and dodging of other cars and pedestrians (hey - you want him to hit them?) It wasn't even when his mobile rang and he picked it up with one hand and started speaking rapid-fire Arabic very loudly (over the radio that was broadcasting the Koran). What had us on the verge of converting to Islam was when he took his other hand off the wheel altogether and started gesticulating frantically. Allahu Akbar, Insh'allah indeed. Been a funny old day - had an amazing sleep, lulled by the prayer call virtually on our balcony and woke up at 6 ish. Convinced our local ATM to cough up some Egyptian pounds and headed off on foot to explore the downtown area. Hot, tired, footsore but happy we spent the afternoon reading, writing and relaxing before undertaking the potential journey to the underworld via taxi. The gods were smiling however and we arrived at the Oasis at about 4.30 pm - WOW! Massive pool. Everybody in the shallow end at 1.5 m. Apparently, Italians can not swim! We headed to the 2.1m wilds of the deep end and chilled as much as you can in glorious 28 degree water. Planning a leisurely pizza and early night we were on the hop when the tour rep (seriously On the Go Tours are the best operators in Egypt - cannot recommed them enough) suggested we use the evening to see the pyramids and Sphinx by night with the Sound and Light show. Sign us up we said and duly gussied up we headed off for a potted history of Egypt as narrated by the Sphinx. Now some have commented it's all a bit tacky and overpriced. Absolutely - you should definitely go to the much classier option at your local pyramids. Oh that's right! this is the only place on earth to see this. As we walked into the complex and had a first glimpse of the Great Pyramid of Cheops lit with a gentle orange glow, it fairly took our breath away. The day has gone from the ridiculous to the sublime and beyond. If this is the start our our "New Road to Jordan" tour then we can only imagine how stupendous the rest will be.
