After Nha Trang we got an overnight bus to Hoi An. After travelling on many of these we weren't too worried about the journey although we did have a bit of a strange one.
The journey should've been about 14 hours so after about 4 hours it stopped at midnight in a restaurant. Usual story, minging toilets and food, probably the bus companies mates place. Anyway we took turns in getting off so we didn't have to leave our stuff. Rich went first then got back on the bus. By the time Allison had come out of the toilet the bus had disappeared with Rich on it. Allison was a little worried after about 30 minutes and no sign of the bus. At first it seemed like the bus had gone for petrol but after 15 minutes or so it became obvious this wasn't the case, was quite worrying as Allison could see the driver chilling with his mates in the cafe. After about 1hr 15 the bus came back. Apparently the bus had a flat tyre and was getting it changed. No-one told anyone on the bus, Allison asked a local girl what was happening and she found out and said that people in Vietnam don't care about customers once they get their money which is nice! Anyway panic over Rich turned up eventually, apparently he was only parked up the road but couldn't walk back as he was getting barked out by a pack of dogs!
Eventually we arrived in Hoi An. It seemed a nice little town, very old, was a UNESCO world heritage site. It had several really old houses and the main source of income in the town seemed to be tailoring. As soon as we arrived we were taken aback with the number of shops, there were hundreds. Not knowing anything about tailoring we went on the internet to get some names of some shops with good reputations as we both wanted to get a couple of suits made. Eventually we settled on a shop called Don Silk. It was a great place, lots of choices, is very overwhelming really looking at all the fabrics especially when we didn't really know too much about it. Anyway we both picked 2 suits and a winter coat and all the fittings began. It was actually quite a stressful experience, so many choices to make, what material, style, cut, took us about 8 fittings each and 4 days to get to the finished articles. By about the 5th and 6th fittings we could see they were getting a little fed up with us, lots of remarks to each other in their own language usual type of stuff. Its funny even though you can't understand the language you always know when you are being insulted. We had 2 nice girls helping us though called Nee and Dong, so we got there in the end.
Whilst we were in Hoi An we checked out a few of the sites, they were mainly old houses, bridges, temples. We also saw a cultural performance which was brilliant!
Finally before we left we visited some really old ruins nearby in a place called My Son. Some of them were ok but some were also disappointing as many were being restored.
Well thats all we really did in Hoi An. We crossed our fingers and posted off the suits and coats, hopefully they will get home in one piece and not fall apart!
