After Kuching our time in Borneo had ended. We had seen some amazing sites but had to leave for Peninsular Malaysia to continue our travels through South East Asia.
Again we used Air Asia and our flight to Kuala Lumpur from Kuching was delayed by about 5 hours. Never mind we did get a free KFC for our troubles, it all counts when you're on a budget!
Kuala Lumpur was a huge city. The Petronas Towers looked quite spectacular, probably the most beautiful high rise buildings we've ever seen. We were able to go onto the Sky bridge walk which was on the 42nd floor of 88. They are the tallest twin towers in the world at 452 metres. We had a full view of the city which was dominated by high rise buildings.
We discovered there are so many shopping malls in Malaysia. We went into one which had a roller coaster actually inside the building! Looked a bit like a big dipper and was rocketing around the 8th floor, as if it was normal to do so, great to watch ! We also took a visit to Chinatown to check out the legendary market. We were surrounded by fake Rolex watches, fake handbags, belts, you could basically buy fake anything. It's here where we had our first haggling experience. Rich wanted to purchase a couple of t-shirts, so obviously first the seller gave an absolutely ridiculous price (well ridiculous considering how cheap things should be in Malaysia probably in hindsight was only about a fiver), Allison rejected this offer and the battle began.Rich was too concerned that the young boy selling the t-shirts was very eager to get his top off so he could try the shirts on. At one point he started trying to help Rich pull his top off then stroked his back saying he was"very strong".Anyway back to business, we settled at about 5 quid for 2 t-shirts after a little friendly abuse from the young Malaysian trader, he said to Allison "why you so stingy miss" she replied "why you so greedy" was all quite fun really think bartering is the way forward. We'll probably be bartering in Sainsbury's when we get home as we are now definately in the habit!
After a few days in Malaysia indulging in Pizza Hut and Cable TV (its the simple things you miss) we left Kuala Lumpur on an overnight train for the Perhentian Islands. The train was actually ok, we were a little worried we may have been targets for the locals but the train was full of families and was actually quite comfortable, we slept in bunk beds in a dorm like compartment.
Better get the snorkel and fins out as the Perhentian Islands were supposed to have amazing marine life!
