Monkey Mia was our next stop after leaving the stunning Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. It is a small town on the coast of Western Australia and is infamous for its dolphins that visit the beach each morning. They have been doing this since the 1960s, it first started when a lady started feeding the dolphins from the back of her boat in the bay area. Since then several female dolphins and their offspring visit the beach everyday for food. They get fed 3 times a day randomnly between 7am and 1pm,depending on when they swim to shore.
The first time we saw this we had just arrived at about 8.30am, it really was an amazing site. We headed to the beach and the dolphins were so close to the shore, probably only about 2 feet away from us. We saw a pod of about 12 dolphins and were really lucky, as some of them had newborn calves. One was only 1 month old and was rushing around in the water, splashing and playing. It was really interesting to observe them as they are very curious creatures. The older dolphins that were 30 and 31 (Nicky and Puc) respectively, would lay on their sides in the water so they could get a closer look at everyone. Apparently they receive clearer vision when their eyes are above the water level. We almost felt like they were watching us rather than the other way around.
As we enjoyed this so much we watched this 5 times. Sounds a lot but we couldn't get enough. Also we were hoping that if we turned up to every session we may be lucky enough to get picked to feed one of them. Unfortunately we didn't but still was well worth seeing.
Also the place where we were staying had 2 cheeky Emu's that walked around the park all day. They are quite scary really, they have such big beaks and claws, we tried to avoid them as much as possible. They are very inquisitve birds and are known to approach humans to check them out. We decided to avoid that, so everytime we saw them lurking somewhere we would try and change direction or lay low. If only Rod Hull were around to tame them for us!
Next stop The Pinnacles, Cervantes.
