After the Great Ocean Road we arrived in Adelaide. It is a small Australian city but we had a great hotel suite booked (with a jacuzzi bath) so were really looking forward to it.
We must admit christmas in Oz felt really strange as it was hot and we never thought we'd say this, but we actually missed the cold English weather, it definately feels more christmassy at home. Anyway in true English style we headed down to the supermarket and stocked up for Christmas as though the world was going to end. We got so much food that we found we were even getting up earlier just to squeeze in another meal. It was really good having our own facilities though, when travelling for so long you actually miss cooking your own food, you really do get fed up of eating out.
On the 23rd of December we took a tour of Kangaroo Island. The island is located 70 miles SW of Adelaide and is the 3rd largest island in Australia. We had a great day, we saw so much wildlife which included ; kangaroos that were so tame they even hopped into the place where we were eating lunch, wallabies, koala's, snakes, goanna's (lizard) ,Echidna's (like a porcupine) and sealions (well they do pop up everywhere). We also got to see some real bushland and a site called remarkable rocks (we actually scoffed at the name thinking we'd be disappointed but they were actually quite amazing). We won't bore you with too many facts as we are trying to cut down on the bore factor but this island is overun with Koala bears. Apparently they are destroying the vegetation at such a fast rate that the government may have to cull them. Although i'm sure if they did they would never say as its not very tourist friendly slaughtering cute little Koala bears !
We travelled back to Adelaide via coach and had Darren from Hollyoaks sat infront of us. He was with his girlfriend and all we can say about her is we bet she was very buoyant in the water. Rich was the one that noticed him think he must be a secret fan!
We spent Christmas day back in Adelaide, we had a great day. We had booked our Christmas dinner in a hotel down the road called the Grosvenor. The meal was good but the only Yorkshire pudding was Allison and there were no pigs in blankets so Rich was a bit disappointed about that. We did get crackers though and the food was good so all in all we had a good time. After all that food we waddled back to our hotel suite and opened a nice bottle of Aussie wine, you have to give them tha,t they are good at making wines! In reflection we think we'll appreciate Christmas at home much more next year. There's alot to be said for dark nights and freezing cold weather believe us, a barbie at the beach just doesn't cut it!
