We´re writing this from the future as it were, as we haven´t really had time to update the journal up until now. So, we´ve finished our 4 day jeep tour of Southern Bolivia, taking in more lagoons than we´ve seen before in a lifetime, some hot springs, flamingos, villages both abandoned and not, and Salar de Uyuni (or the salt flats). We did the tour as a party of 6, with these 2 girls called Anna and Helen, post-grads from Oxford whom we met whilst trying to get a train from Villazón to Uyuni on the Bolivian border (we ended up getting a coach to Tupiza). The tour was good, and aside from the altitude sickness that afflicted Al and Helen in particular, everyone really enjoyed the sites that were there. Will, however, has come away with a particularly negative opinion of Bolivians in general, who he now calls S.B. (work it out). The first day of the tour was almost entirely spent driving, and then everyone waking up at 5 the next morning with splitting headaches as we were about 5000m above sea level. On the second day we saw the laguna verde (green lagoon due to chemicals), bathed in hot springs and saw some geysers. We woke up later on the third day and saw the red lake, coloured that way because of the bacteria that live in it that the flamingos feed on, probably the best site of the trip. Then we stayed the night in this cool hotel made entirely out of salt that also had showers that could be used for 30p. Josie and Al appparently saw this as a waste of money, preferring to save their 5 bolivianos and shower the next evening for the first time in 4 days. That day was spent at the salt flats, first at the Isla del Pescado, an island in the middle of a sea of white which had a lot of cacti growing on it, and then just in the middle of the salt for a bit where we took many ´humorous` photos. The tour finished somewhat to the Northwest of where it had started, in Uyuni, where we said goodbye to Anna and Helen who were really nice, and drove back to Tupiza in the jeep, where we ´are now`.
