Sunday 15th was a long old travel day to get us down to Copan- about 11 hours in total! We left at 5.30am, taxi to ferry, wait for ferry, ferry 90 minutes, taxi to bus station, luckily we caught the bus at 9.30 rather than having to wait til 1.30! This first (public) bus took 3 hours, was pretty hot and sweaty but fortunately we all got a seat. The next bus left at just after 1 and arrived at Copan at about 4.30, I got the last seat on this one! It started off very hot but did cool down a bit as it started to rain on the way. I slept quite a bit on the various journies but it was a long, tiring day. On arrival at the hotel in Copan I had a shower then went out to get some food as I'd not eaten anything all day except some coconut bread! Had a pizza, it was huge so I saved some to take to the ruins for lunch the next day! I was asleep by 8pm- very tired!
We arrived at the Mayan ruins of Copan at 8am for our guided tour. The guide explained what they think they used certain areas for and that excavation of the site was started in 1890 (if I remember rightly!) and work is still going on, although no more digging is going on as he said they have plenty to keep them busy. They think it probably had a population of around 20,000. It reminded me of the ruins at Palenque as it is surrounded by forest, like at Palanque. Copan was a smaller site than others I have seen but was still very interesting.
I headed back to town at about 12 and wandered around a bit, got a much needed refrehing juice as very hot as always!
Our mini bus left at 2pm and it wasn't long before we were at the border with Guatemala, only about 20 minutes. This one cost us $1 to leave and $1.50 to enter Guatemala. The mini bus took us all the way to Antigua, but we didn't arrive til about 9.30, with a stop en route for food. We had Guatemalan KFC, I forget the name, but i had some prawns and chips instead of chicken. I'm craving some fresh veg and healthy food after the last few days of snacks and missing proper meals!
On arrival in Antigua I was pleased to find it was slightly cooler here! I even had to dig out my fleece. Didn't like the fact it was pouring with rain or the fact my room smells damp (not the best) but it was nice to feel cold for a change!
