Geez I´m a bit far behind on this whole blog thing!
So Honduras consisted of white water rafting, diving, horse riding with Carlos the hunk and lots of buses. So instead of going through the normal boring day to day ramble I will proceed to go through the activities that I participated in. So here goes...
White Water Rafting
Staying at a beautiful lodge in the middle of the jungle, aptly named Jungle Lodge, where we signed up for a half day white water rafting. Unfortunately due to the level of the water, in that there was not much, we also did some rock jumping and floating down the river. The rock jumps were awesome but I did end up landing on my boobs again which seems to be a running trait of mine - it´s not like they are that big anyway! The guide was really good and knew every turn and bend of the river. The rapids were good but wish they could´ve been stronger. One group actually fell out of their raft but luckily my butt stayed firmly in place. One other selling point of the lodge was the man-made/natural rock ponds, excellent for sunbathing.
Diving
Utila is supposed to be one of the top dive sites of the world. Now I am not sure whether I have just been lucky and dived in better ones or that the visibility was not great that day but I was somewhat disappointed. We headed out early in the morning and thankfully I pretty much remembered where all the equipment needed to go - bit of a relief seeing that we were down 20m. The boat ride was pretty rough but not as bad as the boat to actually get to the island of Utila (reminded me of the Portsmouth to France vomit rocket). So back to the diving, we only managed to do one dive site as it was too rough which is a shame and I didn´t really see any more than I have before (such a dive snob I am). The island of Utila was nice but a bit dive orientated which got a bit too much after a while. For the first day or two we were wondering why nothing in town was open until we discovered that the tax man had come round and closed all the businesses as noone had paid their taxes. Luckily for us the two places that were left open were cheap as chips and totally yum. Also we had some yummy drinks on Tequila Tuesday in a tree house which Lonely Planet has named the 2nd best bar ion the world and I would have to agree.
Horse Riding
Once we got to Copan we headed out to Carlos the Hunk´s finca (yes he is also a millionaire). This huge sprawling farm comes with its own tilapia pond, stables, pools, coffee plantation, trees and plants of yuca, guanabana, tamarind, banana, and a hydroelectric generator. Our main activity that day was the horses but also to see the coffee. Our day started with them making us a fresh guanabana juice drink (it has the texture of pineapple and the taste of a sweet/sour fruit). Then it was time to meet the horses which generally don´t like me much. My horse was called muñeca and for once I had quite a tame beast. Katie´s on the other hand was quite a feisty horse and galloped off loads. The ride took us all through the farm, the coffee plantation and past the tilapia ponds. Now the guide, Carlos the hunk, was a real-life hunk. Imagine a more muscley and younger George Clooney with more of a tan, a cowboy hat and nice fitting jeans. Katie had her wedding all planned out - it was going to be a lovely affair but unfortunately she left without a ring.
So that pretty much sums up Honduras. Now the country itself was far more American and built up than Guatemala and the people were slightly less friendlier. The landscape on the other hand was pictoresque and it is a shame we didn´t see more of it.
On to El Salvador for what one might call a short pit stop.
