Nikki and Matt's World Tour
Our last few days in Hong Kong were spent enjoying the tourist sights and trying to avoid all the hawkers that kept offering to measure Matt up for a suit.
We got the metro over to Central, the main business district in Hong Kong Island which is full of designer stores like Gucci and Prada. Unfortunately our limited budget could only allow for window shopping.
The contrast in rich and poor was quite startling though, small crowded street markets down tiny allyways which lead onto major thoroughfares with huge glass skyscrapers gleaming in the sun.
And there was plenty to buy in the markets if your tastebuds fancy it - live fish swimming around and even live frogs in cages waiting to be eaten. Needless to say we didn't buy anything.
We made our way up the hillside to the Mid Levels (so called because it is halfway up the hill towards The Peak), via a series of escalators. This was a very odd experience, hopping on escalators and travelators to make our way up the hill. We kept stopping off en route to meander around the small streets and have a drink during the Happy Hour.
The cost of things is quite startling. Our metro ticket for five stops was only $5 (about 30p) yet beer can cost up to a fiver for a pint. Hmm, something is wrong somewhere! So once Happy Hour was over, we called it a night.
But there are plenty of other experiences to be had. We also went to the Temple Street Night Market, a busy bustling area full of stalls selling everything from T-shirts to fake designer handbags.
After spending the weekend in Hong Kong, we decided to get some more colonial history by taking a ferry ride 60kms away to Macau.
This former Portugese colony has an almost Europeon feel - youngsters on scooters zipping around the small cobbled streets, beautiful churches and pedestrianized squares with fountains and huge imposing buildings. We've done a bit of sightseeing and might go to a museum this afternoon at a former fortress.
The reason we've come here is because we can get cheap flights to Bangkok, so we might make our way there in the next few days.
Hope you are all ok anyway and enjoying these ramblings!
Take care,
Love Nikki
