Nikki and Matt's World Tour
Well we've now reached the last stop in our South East Asian tour - Singapore. And it's fabulous!
I really love this city. It's clean, spacious, green, and hi-tech, with a spattering of beautiful old colonial buildings. It's got everything you need - including endless shopping malls! I think shopping is a national sport here!
On our first evening we went down to the river to visit Boat Quay and Clarke Quay (I had my picture taken under that sign, of course!). The river was the main reason for the city's existence but since trading stopped here, they've cleaned it up and turned all the old warehouses into funky bars and resturants.
It's a really cool area and it was great having dinner overlooking the river as the sun set.
We've also visited a few museums to learn a bit of culture. The best was the heritage museum in Chinatown where they've recreated shophouses where scores of migrant Chinese workers lived in cramped, dirty conditions. It was certainly an eye opener.
But on the other end of the scale, we've also had afternoon tea in the landmark hotel, Raffles. It is gorgeous; a huge colonial building recreated in circa 1915 style. We will definately be going back there before the week is out to sample a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar, where the drink was first created!
We're here until Friday, when we then board a plane to Perth. So next time you here from me, we'll be on the other side of the Equator. I'm really looking forward to it, but just as we've got used to the heat and humidity, we'll be flying into their bleak midwinter!
Oh well, we've got another three days in Singapore to enjoy first!
Hope you are all ok.
Take care,
Love Nikki
