My flight from Australia to Thailand was delayed an hour so I finally arrived at 2am. I decided to book a hotel near the airport (they picked me up and had a sin with my name on when I walked out in to arrivals...I felt special. Haha) and travel into the centre of Bangkok the following day. The hotel was amazing and I had a king size bed and check out was at 2pm so I had an amazing sleep!
Travelled into Bangkok by taxi, the driver was like a crazy stig, weaving in and out of traffic at 100mph but I arrived safely at the hostel. I spent the afternoon walking around, getting my bearings and being harassed by Thai men asking if I wanted a taxi or a tuk tuk, this is a common occurace in Thailand I quickly figured out. I dont think it helps that I'm tall and have blonde hair as they can spot me a mile off!!
So I was in Bangkok for a week in total. I met a girl called Dani and we explored the great palace where we had to rent clothes so we didn't disrespect the buddah's and temple. I had a very fetching bright orange sarong. The palace was amazing, so much gold and jewels. We travelled to the temple on the river boat and the river was pretty stinky and full of eel like fish. We crossed the river to go to another temple which looked like a short walk. After walking around for an hour in the heat we hopped on a tuk tuk and the driver dropped us at the door 15 minutes away! Dani and I experienced our first tuk tuk the night before when we travelled to Chinatown for street food. We stopped to ask a tuk tuk to take us who refused at the price we offered so we walked off and he drove off. About 10 minutes later down the road he stopped and had two Thai girls in his car, he said he would take us for free! So we hopped in and then quickly wondered why he was taking us for free and if we would actually arrive in china town. Well he dropped us right at the gates to china town for free and we had a lovely meal. So our random experience turned out all good!
So in Bangkok I spent a lot of time arranging my forward travel, eventually booking on a tour of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam with a company called Stray and then I had to organise my Vietnamese visa which was a bit more of a hassle than it had to be as the agent at stray told me the wrong date I would be entering Vietnam in.
I met an English girl in the hostel called Elspeth who I hung around with for a few days. She had been travelling for 3 years so had a lot of interesting stories and a couple of interesting tattoos! We went on a night out and ended up in the gay town of Bangkok which was an interesting experience and I ended up chatting to a Thai man who not only worked at a hotel also worked in human trafficking. Luckily I didn't end up being trafficked out of Thailand and we made it back to the hostel in one piece. I had my second random night out with Dani and Laura in the hostel where we went to Koh San Road which is one of the main backpacker roads in Bangkok. It was a night filled with beer towers, pad Thai and drunken English men buying us beer. Fun!
Bangkok was a lot of fun but I was ready to explore the rest of Thailand and excited to start my tour.
