My Birthday! We spent a wonderful day at Bodega Carrau´s Harvest Celebration, which consisted of a barbeque, wines, and traditional gaucho dancing. The girls brought me cupcakes and brownies, made with dulce de leche of course, and set me up to dance tango with the dancers. Afterwards we headed to Punta del Este, about a four hours drive from Montevideo. Punta del Este (East Point) is South America`s second most glamorous and exclusive beach resort after Brasil´s Copacabana. It is the place to be seen, with it´s golden sand beaches and perfect waves, casinos and expensive restaurants, and celebrities. We arrived at Juliana´s flat 2 blocks from the ocean, and since in Uruguay you don´t go out until 1am unless face social suicide, we spent the night relaxing and enjoying a sunset. I made a dinner of chicken marsala and a fabulous salad of spinach, roasted red peppers, marinated mushrooms, and sweet and salty pecans. Each course we paired with Carrau wines of course. By midnight I was holding my eyelids open, I am not turning 21! But determined to make the bday night last, had some mate. We headed out finally to Soho and Moby Dick, Punta`s flashy beachside watering holes. Reinvigorated by the ocean breeze, we danced until the sun came up to a mixture of American rock and Uruguayan cumbia. After sleeping for a few hours, the next day we lounged around, Aline made omelettes for breakfast, and we enjoyed the sights of Punta.
