Mostly driving today but we did stop for dinner in Amarillo, Tx. Amarillo used to be a big truck stop town since its the only sign of life for miles and miles of desert, but it's grown into a little oasis of steakhouses and chain hotels. It's famous for this restaurant, Big Texan Steak Ranch, that's famous for promoting a free 72 oz steak dinner if you can eat it in under an hour. It's a bit of a tourist trap though so we headed off the beaten path a little into rural Amarillo to the Coyote Blues Cafe which was just on the food networks "Man vs. Food" show for their famous burgers. We had chili fries and burgers of course. The best burger ever. When you walk in, the waitress says "Hey y'all, want a beer? Go head and grab one" and points to the old claw foot tub in the middle of the dining area filled with ice and beer. It was awesome. We left and wanted to drive a bit to get closer to New Mexico. Again, miles of endless road, and then Tucumcari, New Mexico. We pulled off and somehow ended up on historic Route 66. Which is still lined with retro motels, restaurants, and gas stations. It was like taking a step back into the past. We stayed at the Historic Route 66 motel which was awesome for $34. It managed to look dated, without being outdated. Great day!
