We rolled into Memphis around noon for some Tenessee BBQ and to pay our respects to the King. Lunch at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken. For $6, a plate enough for 2 with the best fried chicken I've ever had, baked beans and coleslaw. Oh, and fried pickles. Todd was very excited to be able to order a 40 oz Bud light...when in Rome. We were in food heaven and did well. Then of to Graceland. Despite the fact that it's now a museum and decorated in tacky 70's style, it had a nice energy and felt like a cozy home. You can feel Elvis in every room, mostly because he decorated it with his signature colorful style. Who else would make a room in their house called "the jungle room"? Learned a lot about Elvis I had not known, like what a generous and driven person he was. Have a bit of an Elvis crush now, ha! I loved Graceland.
After, we checked into the Vista Motel, right downtown and 1 block from Beale Street, famous for "the Beale Street Blues" because of the dozens of bars lining the street with live bands playing a mixture of blues and country. Walked down to Rendezvous, a Memphis legend for their charbroiled hickory smoked ribs. The best ribs I've ever had, holy smokes. Our waiter was perfect. "ribs come wit slaw and beans cuz that's all we got". "What y'all want?". He reminded me of an older version of Bernie Mac, and wouldn't let us pay until we finished the last drops of our beers. After dinner we headed to Beale Street. We chose B.B.Kings Blues Club, where BB King himself plays occasionally, and were not dissapointed. The live band played a mix of cover blues songs and surprises like Guns and Roses. They were awesome and we had a table right in front of the stage to watch and munch on some fried catfish bites. Will definitely leave Memphis feeling a little chubby but had an awesome time!
