We arrived in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York around 3. Green rolling hills laced with grape vines that slope down into the lakes is our view. There is a winery every mile it seems so our first stop was Lamoreaux Landing, Wine & Spirits 2010 Winery of the year. The tasting room had the most amazing view of the vineyards and lake below. The Finger Lakes are famous for their cold weather grapes like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc but they grow many others as well. Our first tasting at Lamoreaux we tried six fantastic wines, my favorites were their Reserve Riesling and their "76 West" a Bordeaux style blend of Cab, merlot, and cab franc. The late harvest and ice wines are amazing here too and we loved Lamoreaux's "Riesling Ice" and bought one to drink for dessert later. Next we stopped at Standing Stone, like Lamoreaux another rising star winery that was a former chicken farm. They make 10-12,000 cases a year. We tried about 15 wines, the Riesling, gewürztraminer, cab franc, and "Pinnacle" blend were amazing. They had an ice Gewürztraminer that was heaven. The grapes are artificially frozen because this area is in the banana belt so the grapes never freeze. Next we went to Glenora Winery, one of the most historic and famous wineries. After a tasting we checked into our gorgeous room overlooking the vineyards and Seneca lake and had cheese and wine on the deck. Maybe it was the wine thinking for us but we decided a dip in the lake sounded good so we went down and jumped in. I think I froze a toe off but it was glorious, its 75 degrees but it is also March after all. Reminded me of that famous "polar bear dip" aka "penguin plunge" all those crazy New Englanders do in the winter.
