Hello from Byron Bay!
We arrived in Byron Bay on Friday atfernoon after travelling two hours on the bus from Brisbane. We were quite excited to be doing our first bit of travelling along the coast by bus, even though it was only a mere 2 hours. I think we'll be in for a shock later on with some of our other journeys!
Anyway, we found our accomodation which is a really lovely little hostel/guesthouse just off the main road in the town. Straight away we were so happy we had chosen this hostel as it was just what we wanted. A lovely, little, relaxing haven which is still close to all the action. After feeling pretty warn out with having loads to sort out in Brisbane I think this is just what we needed.
Straight away, we left our increasingly heavy bags and went to find the beach as this was the first time we had properly seen the sea. I think no matter how old you are or where you are, this is always pretty exciting. We then walked round the town which, in comparison to Brisbane seems so small. It really is the Surfers Paradise I had read about too (well I'm sure it would be if I could surf!). Theres a real quirky, hippy vibe around all the little street. If I stayed here much longer I may find myself investing in some bongos and getting dreadlocks!
Unfortunately, we haven't been too lucky with the weather here though as it has rained a bit and it gets pretty cold late afternoon which we were pretty shocked about. It even rains in sunny Australia!! We therefore haven't tried surfing which seems a bit of a sin in Byron Bay as it seems like everyone does it. The waves just looked slightly too big for us after watching many people attempt to surf. Well, thats what we're using as our excuse anyway! I'm not sure if im quite ready for it yet. Maybe at Bondi.
We had a pretty incredible first morning on Saturday though as whilst we sat eating breakfast at a beachside cafe we saw a whale out in the distance!! It was amazing! After being told we may see some, we were pretty doubtful but there it was popping out of the water. To make it even more amazing, it was shortly follwed by a group of dolphins leaping in and out if the water! This soon made up for the rain as we were just in awe.
Today, we walked up to Byron Bay's most easterly point, the lighthouse. We were lucky with the weather too so it was a really nice although really hot and tiring walk. We did have a break at one point though where we managed to spot another group of dolphins playing out in the sea! On our way back we found another of Byrons beaches in a little cove so we got to do our first bit of proper sunbathing.
Anyway we are off to get some food now so I'll round this off. Ooo I have forgot to mention however that we came out of our hostel yesterday to find a very large lizard by the door!! We were very shocked and a little bit scared. It pretty much held us hostage for quite a while as we didn't dare move. The hostel owner however ensured us that this was pretty small compared to some so I think we might have to get used to it!
Ill be putting on pictures soon but currently on a very slow computer so you'll have to wait.
Bye!x x x x x
