Despite my illness making me a little lethargic during my time on Maggy Island, I'm going to miss it. It had a really good chilled out vibe about the place that sprang to life on an evening. Certainly a worthwhile visit if you want to experience an island lifestyle for a few nights.
However, we were on the road again making the 400km trek up to Mission Beach. The village didn't promise huge amounts as it usually just a spot to stop at if you were jumping out of a plane (to parachute onto a beach) or if you were rafting the Tully river which offers a grade 4 rapid experience. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the relaxed village lifestyle, well equipped hostel and stunning scenery. Everything is tropical north of Rockhampton with luscious rain forest flanking every road you drive along. Mission Beach has an abundance of beautiful flora and fauna. It's national parks are also home to the native, endangered cassowary bird. Standing at over 1m tall, the birds are actually considered dangerous and have been known to attack moving cars! Thankfully, during our stay we didn't encounter any.
As for the activities we did do... Well, as we have done in most of Aus, the beach was utilised and our tan lines were coming on a treat. Hopefully we can keep them throughout Asia and come home a stark contrast of the pasty white lads we went away as! On the Sunday, the hostel threw a 'session' which involved a free shuttle to a nearby bar and free booze - result! But yeah, apart from that, we spent a lot of time relaxing, recovering and gearing up for our final leg of Australia up to Cairns.
