Yeehaa partners, we've made it to the Australian outback for our 2nd of the Oz Experiences overnight stops at Kroombit Cattle Station. The 10,000 acre, fully functional station is open to tourism all year round and presented us with the opportunity to embrace the cowboy/girl lifestyle.
Our bus journey from 1770 was a nice one and we were entertained by 'Nipples' as he introduced us to the game of making sculptures out of tinfoil... Kept me busy for hours! Upon arrival we were greeted by a scrumptious meal of steak and a selection of salads whilst our host went through the activities we had ahead of us.
Starting us off, the group of 15 were driven on the back of a pickup truck to the shooting range where people got the opportunity to fire some shots at clay pigeons. We all then got in the cowboy spirit and tried our hand at lasso throwing. Surprisingly it wasn't too hard once you found a rhythm and people were soon catching one another red handed. Then came the main event as we were taken into the kroombitaseum (basically a circular rodeo ring). There we were given the challenge of dragging a goat from it's pen by hand before having a fellow team mate lasso it whilst the other branded it. I was given the task of skipping around in the mud and grabbing the goat by it's horns. Woody then swung his lasso and on our second attempt we managed to snatch ourselves a catch and get it branded! The farm life was thrust into us and it was an awesome experience to try it all. For an added bit of excitement we even got introduced to spin the bottle with a bit of a difference. All stood in a big circle with our hands together we got well acquainted with a cattle prod and spread the shock between the group to get us absolutely buzzing for the evening ahead.
On our arrival back to the main farm we were given nibbles of freshly stewed pumpkin and goat (which is actually a deliciously tender meat) before settling down near the open fire for an amazing roast dinner. Once our stomachs were packed to the brim we were given a brief history of the area by the farm owner who then took us around back to show us how to crack a whip. It looks a lot easier than it actually is, and if done right, breaks the sound barrier creating a mean noise which leaves your ears ringing for a few minutes. Then came beer o'clock and time to try our luck on the mechanical bull aka the nutcracker. Most of us lasted around 3-5 seconds but Woody managed to endure the pain and win it for the lads lasting an impressive 17 seconds. Funniest part of it all was the dismounts as people got bucked left right and centre in hilarious fashion. The bull relaxed/broke everyone and the bar was thriving as we finished roasting marshmallows on an open fire... Heaven!
And so came an end to our farm experience out on the picturesque Kroombit Cattle Station. I loved my time there and the smell alone made me think of the days spent on my grandparents farm when I was a kid. Our time in Australia is truly flying by and up next we have our much anticipated sailing adventure aboard the 'Boomerang' around the Whitsunday islands.
