Our departure from Sydney was a shocker, 6:00am start followed by the Oz Experience driver 'Woody' (a woman) driving off with the trailer door open which then went at war with a tree - safe to say the tree won! But anyway, new trailer hitched we were on our way to surf camp at the secluded 'Spot X' south of the golden coast.
Our first day was due to be a 8-10 hour drive but unlike the greyhound bus services we'd be entertained along the way. Woody was actually a really great driver and kept force feeding us facts and stories about the areas we passed through. She also wore a tutu for the duration of the journey (apparently she always does). The Oz Experience also makes stops at various locations to take in sights and attractions you'd normally miss if you were travelling by non-guided means. We stopped at the giant banana in Coff's Harbour and passed a fake Ayers Rock, not the most interesting of places but a nice opportunity all the same.
We arrived at surf camp at around 5:00pm and got checked in to our shipping container accommodation... Yes, no joke, shipping containers. They were refurbished obviously and provided a good bed which was all we really needed. Following that we all tucked in to a fantastic buffet lunch provided by the camp. Good way to line the stomachs heavily before the party ahead. Camp fire lit, lounge transformed into dance room, goon a plenty - the night ahead was sure to get messy! It was nice to see everyone relax and get to know each other a little.
The next morning we had wake up calls at 7:00am to get another awesome buffet meal in us before the main event - the surf lesson! We started by learning the basic rules and safety regulations which consisted of rules such as not peeing in the wetsuits and trying to look cool at all times. We then donned another flattering wetsuit each and picked up our boards to take down to the beach. Lesson no.2 came next as we were given advice on how to time the surf and how to stand up on the boards. Then came the fun! The waves were insane and certainly outshone any you got in England. We had our personal photographer snapping away too at all the hilarious face plants and bails. But soon enough people started to grasp the surf and with the help of the instructors we were all timing waves and riding them into shore. It was exhilarating, knackering and so much fun. We were in the water for just over 2 and a half hours and it just flew by despite the amount of sea water swallowed!
A tired walk back up the beach we were in stitches looking over the photos taken. But we couldn't hang around for long as the Oz Experience didn't wait around... We were off to the town of Byron Bay!
