Rather than give you a day to day synopsis of our time in Byron Bay, I'm going to keep this blog relatively short. Only because it'd just be a very repetitive read of: relaxation, getting drunk and enjoying the beach/town. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy!
The drive to Byron Bay was another long journey but the scenery kept us occupied as we caught glimpses of the gorgeous gold coast. We were stopped at a viewpoint that may not have showcased something with truly epic magnitude like New Zealand, but still offered a stunning view of what we had to come.
Byron Bay is a relatively small town at the south end of Australia's infamous gold coast. The town is known for it's relaxed atmosphere and gets extremely busy in the summer months with tourists from both abroad and Australia coming here to enjoy the huge beach. It's also home to a high population of hippies who settled in the town after a big festival they held here. The town itself did not offer a huge variety of things to do during the day so it left us with plenty of time to unwind, plan the journey ahead and enjoy the weather at the beach.
The main activity we did do was a walk up to the lighthouse that marked the most easterly point of Australia. The walk followed the coast and gave some great views of the golden sands. It also gave us another opportunity to catch glimpses of whales and dolphins out to sea.
During our stay we were based at 'Nomads hostel' which, after screwing us around with the bookings, turned out to be a nice place to stay. It was a brand new hostel and came with a good selection of free deals on food, drink and walks. It even boasted 2 jacuzzis, but they were unfortunately out of order :-(!
And speaking of the free drinks, the towns nightlife was especially good and typically we sampled it on more than one occasion. Bars such as 'Cheeky Monkeys' kept us entertained with coyote ugly night, wet t-shirt competitions, body paint and free beer/garlic bread for simply shouting loudly! Other places worth a visit were Cocomanga's and the Northern Hotel which were both conveniently located a minutes walk from our front door. A big shout out needs to go to Chris from the Oz Experience bus we came on too - he was our major drinking games partner!
I'm not the type of person that finds it easy to relax but Byron Bay has certainly helped me settle into the Aussie lifestyle. It's been a great place to stay and we've met plenty of really cool people. Another shout out needs to go to Ellen who was also really cool to chill out with, best of luck to you on your internship in Brisbane!
