Day 4 Uluru
A 3.30am start, apparently so that we could make it all the way to Uluru, about 800kms through the outback. Although the bus was pretty uncomfortable and the driving was long, we really enjoyed seeing the red centre and getting a feel for the vast-ness of Australia. Finally made it to Uluru in time for sunset. Even though we'd seen Uluru a thousand times on photos, postcards etc., there is something very special about this place. Quite surreal standing there, with a glass of champagne in hand, staring at this great big red rock… Very special. We also managed to fit in a stop at the Uluru visitor center and read loads of information about the history and saw lots of aboriginal art. That evening it was more BBQ food (and some very interesting made-up cake/fruit/custard pudding), a few wines, then lots of singing and story telling around the campfire. The 18-year-old Welsh Rugby boys provided most of the entertainment through their typical rugby songs and attempts at Dutch accents. Zoe also got a bit worried when she found a highly venomous 'red-back spider' close by, but was saved by Jen our brave tour guide!
Finally it was off to bed, this time in sleeping bags and Swags around the fire under the stars. The sky was so clear and it was one of the highlights of the trip just lying there watching out for shooting stars and satellites. What a great peaceful way to end a great day.
