(Repost, I screwed up and got confused about what we did this evening!)
First things first, off to the local hospital to get Fabrice's chest looked at. The pesky cough was still very much with us. Having made an appointment the day before he was seen very quickly, and one x-ray later prescribed some super strong antibiotics. No injection in a store cupboard this time unfortunately! The hospital was excellent, brand new and state of the art. Very impressed.
That done we headed to the Museo de la Memoria y Los Derechos Humanos, a museum dedicated to the memory of the many thousands of people who 'disappeared' during the Pinochet years (1973-1990). Firstly it is housed in a stunning new complex near the centre of the city. A very impressive building that Prince Charles would no doubt hate. Secondly the museum itself is extremely well done, very informative and the exhibits/information presented in a variety of interesting and moving ways. The admittedly very long winded audio commentary (most of the displays were only in Spanish - tut tut ha ha) assumed a bit more background knowledge than us two idiots had. We came away much educated and somewhat in awe at how much the country went through and has developed since then.
After a quick wander around the beautiful park Quinta Normal, narrowly avoiding being soaked by school kids escaping the heat in a fountain, we headed for the Barrio Brasil. This is a previously very prosperous area full of beautiful but dilapidated colonial buildings. As with similar areas in so many cities, this is now "on the up" and is a bohemian hang out with a few cool bars etc. We enjoyed a leisurely beer overlooking the central square which was a hive of activity and home to some very unusual "swings and things" - see the photo attached to this blog.
In the evening we treated ourselves to a good steak and decent bottle of wine at a steakhouse in Bellavista. We even stretched to cheesecake for desert! Delicious.
