Finally a beach resort, Nha Trang. We arrived at 5am in the morning, We were kicked off the bus pretty quick to (literally hundreds) of taxi drivers. As we knew where we were going, we headed straight to our hotel and of course two of the taxi drivers were persistent and continued to follow us for a good ten minutes until Helen had a raging argument with one of them (There was a lot of shouting, swearing (from the taxi driver) and waving arms and all!). (Nick was terrified, well lack of sleep and food means a very grumpy Helen).
Surprisingly, the town was swarming even at 5am, the locals were on their daily run, setting up their restaurants, or just walking their dog. We were ready for bed so we went straight to bed for a couple of hours until approx 11am. Helen woke up to a rose and card from Nick - a good start to Valentines Day....We haven't celebrated the last couple of Valentines so it was a surprise.
The afternoon was spent on the beach recharging our batteries and catching some much needed rays to top up our fading tan. The beach was pristine and whilst sunbathing we saw cable cars and a Hollywood style sign for Vinpearl so decided to look into this later on.
As it was Valentines Day, Nick took Helen out for a meal and we had our starter at Ciao Vietnam to take advantage of their happy hour and our main course at Lanterns a restaurant that re invests back into the community. (We couldn't decide between the two, so decided to eat at both!). As the night was still young we went out for a few drinks.
As we did some research on Vinpearl, we decided we wanted to visit it and act like 8 years old again. Vinpearl is on Hon Tre Island (Bamboo Island) and is a major resort with a theme park, water park, aquarium, indoor games and a cable car! $12 for an entire day....
Our day started with a ride on the cable car system which is apparently the worlds longest across the sea cable car at 3320m and traveling at 40-60m above sea level). Our first stop was the Aquarium, which was average but their aquarium tunnel (90m long) was great - we saw a Bowman Guitar Shark, Lemon Sharks etc.... then it was off to the Waterpark as Nick could not restrain his excitement.
At the waterpark, the rides were average with the exception of one or two - but if we had the same rides back in the UK they would have broken every health and safety regulation in the book. In that respect it was awesome.
A lot of the rides did not have a lifeguard (even the wave pool) and there were lots of little kids. The waves were enormous, although they could learn from Center Parcs and their rapids!! One of the better rides was the Tsunami slide. We both got in a double ring and the man, who worked there, cackled as he pushed us off. I swear we nearly went over the edge!!!
After spending 4-5 hours in the Waterpark we headed to the indoor games where we both became intent on breaking the record for the most hoops shooted (basketball) and we came close... Team effort!! We went on the dodgems and played loads of 1980's computer games!!! Then we headed to the theme park and went on the carousel three times, pirate ship, rollercoaster (like the runaway train at Alton Towers!) etc before realising we had a massive queue to catch the cable car back to main land!!! All in All, well worth the $12 and a fab day was had... Some things are worth breaking the backpackers budget for!
Nha Trang gets a LOT of Russian tourists in Nha Trang, I guess it is their equivalent of Spain or something. Honestly, it wont be long before the Russians claim world domination as every beach resort we have been to has menus in Russian, hotels run by Russian people etc...
Off to Ho Chi Minh, or otherwise known as Saigon next....
