Koh Phi Phi! A place we have both visited previously, and how it has changed so much since the damage of the tsunami. (Before we forget, again Happy New Year everybody!)
On the first day of 2012, we arrived on Phi Phi and it was raining, Heavily! Lovely(!) Having spent a while looking for a room, we managed to find a hut with a private bathroom near the beach. The rest of the day was spent walking around, trying to recognise places to no avail in particular from Nick's side as it has been ten years.
Aysin joined us on the island later on in the afternoon as he wanted a lie in, we met him at the pier, ready to take him to our hut. On our way, we were jumped on by Mel (our wonderful friend from London who we knew was staying on Phi Phi). Mel was in a bar with her friends so we joined them, and spent some time catching up etc into the early hours. It was great to see Mel again.
The next day, the four of us went diving with Viking Divers whom Mel's friend Justin is an instructor for. We took in some local dive sites which was great fun! Viking Divers were fab and really helpful especially with the numerous questions from both Helen and Nick.
On our last night on Phi Phi, Helen, Nick and Mel did a night dive which was awesome! We saw a cute seahorse which took Mel about 10 minutes to find and and the most adorable juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips. We hope we will get to dive with Mel again - maybe a Red Sea Liveaboard!?!
We said our farewells to everyone and the following morning caught an early ferry to Ao Nang which is another tale in itself!
Obviously, in the few days we were on Phi Phi, we did nothing but sunbathing, drinking, eating, in particular catching up with Mel and her two lovely friends Justin and Christine (and diving of course).
On reflection, Nick does not recognise Phi Phi once on the island, which is not surprising as he visited before the Tsunami and the redevelopment has made it a lot more modern. However if you are on a boat looking towards Phi Phi, it looks exactly the same, apart from a tad more boats.
