Our next blog is from Tanah Rata in the Cameron Highlands, Nick last visited the Highlands 10 years ago with Fergus and we even stayed in the same hostel. The Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's most extensive hill station and due to the numerous tea plantations surrounding T.Rata, the vast majority of the population are Indian. Nick remembers differently 10 years ago...
The Cameron Highlands, as the name suggests is high up in the hills with miles of rolling tea plantations. The town of Tanah Rata, was nothing special although small, it managed to fit in a HSBC and a Starbucks! Talk about globalisation, even in a remote village high up in the hills!
It was so nice in the Cameron Highlands, as the highest temperature annually is an average of 23 degrees and we were able to sleep without air con or a fan which was a relief. Although, our bed should have won an award for 'Asia's worst and most lumpy bed ever'. No wonder, both of us woke up both mornings more tired than when we went to bed.
We spent 2 nights in the Cameron Highlands, taking in the sights of the tea plantations and we booked ourselves on a tour to take in as much as we could in such a short space of time. Our tour included a visit to a buddhist temple, bee farm, rose farm, strawberry farm, butterfly farm and a tea plantation - would you believe it the BOH tea plantation. We couldn't wait to get our hands on a decent cup of tea with proper milk.
Our journey to Kuala Lumpur, although we saved some time due to the drivers erratic driving along the long winding roads was not an enjoyable experience as none of the seat belts were working so we were thrown around the car like rag dolls.
On arrival at Kuala Lumpur (our third time to the city) it felt like coming home as everything was so familiar and it was so nice to be able to walk around without needing a map or even the guidance of the Lonely Planet.
