Diving in Semporna was out of this world! Sipadan is one of the top ten dive sites in the world and even seeing it from the above is amazing - basically just off the island there is a huge wall of coral which drops straight down for over 600m! We did two days diving there and it was awesome. We were diving with huge turtles swimming along beside us, being surprised with the sudden appearance of grey reef sharks (up to 2 and a half metres in length!) and white tipped reef sharks, being surrounded by tornados of schooling barracuda, awestruck by a herd of massive bumphead parrotfish swim above us, saddened by the skeleton of a turtle in Turtle Tomb who got lost in a massive cave - too many amazing things to name really and thats not even starting on the millions of beautiful corals and gorgeous reef fish.
In sharp contrast to Sipadan we dove in Mabul and Kapalai aswell with most of the dive sites consisting of artificial reef and wrecks - it was totally different, a macro diving paradise. Some of the highpoints were Elvis the massive moray eel, an incredibly rare juvenile yellow clown frogfish, beautiful lionfish, super ugly (and
poisonous) crocodile fish, scorpionfish and scorpion leaf fish, intricate and tiny nudibranches and colourful napoleon wrasse.
We also did our first ever night dive which was pretty scary - heading out into the blue with just a torch to guide you. The dive site itself was under a floating fish farm and some stilted houses so it was a bit of a tip but the things we saw made it all worthwhile; baby octopus, a seahorse family, bright red and orange spanish dancers, boxer shrimp, decorator crab (he'd used bits of newspaper to disguise
himself - ingenious!), juvenile harlequin sweetlips and it wasn't as scary as we'd imagined.
We could have done so many more days of diving in Semporna, there is just so much to see and so much variety - we'll definitely be coming back.
