After seeing the wildlife the oceans around Borneo had to offer it was time to see what the jungles had as well. We headed into the jungle near the Kinabantangan River with Mal and Sylvi. One our boat ride into the jungle the fun started with long tailed macaques jumping between the trees and the most amazing Probiscus monkeys right in front of us. The Probiscus monkeys have the funniest noses but they didn't seem to want to let us see their noses, like as if they're ashamed of their big noggins! Poor things!
Every morning we were woken in our very basic hut accommodation by packs of macaques running across the rafters! The camp had a huge monitor lizard roaming around and we were lucky enough to see him pounce on a rat and eat it whole and alive! We also had a huge bearded pig which our guide told us they had previously see eat his own son!
On our night safaris we saw some huge pythons on the banks of the river, lots of really cool frogs, some rather large spiders and even scorpions. Plus amazingly coloured sleeping birds - its great when they're asleep on a branch right above your head because you can get a really good look (and some great photos) without them flying off.
The orangutans who visited the camp and sat up high on the trees observing us were a definite highlight. With only about 15,000 orangutans still alive and in the wild in the world we were lucky enough to see 2. They're huge and incredibly smart - when they got sick of us looking at them they just took aim and threw stuff at us or worse yet, peed!
