Getting to Mulu National Park involved 3 flights in one day - unfortunately on our last flight the weather had really gotten up around the park and after circling 3 times the pilot decided we couldn't land and headed back to Miri. And thanks to Malaysian Airlines we had a night in a fancy hotel and a gorgeous dinner - the perfect little luxury between two trips into the wilderness.
Mulu National Park is amazing - if you've seen Planet Earth where they explore all of the most spectacular caves in the world then you've seen Deer Cave in Mulu. Lang Cave was absolutely beautiful with huge ornate stalagmites and stalagtites decorating it throughout. Deer Cave is the largest cave passage in the world but the really unusual thing about it is the 3 million bats that live inside it (and the horrible bright gold earwigs that live off the bats!). And just before sundown when you're lucky all of those bats leave the cave in a huge stream that turns the sky black.
The flooding got incredibly bad on our second day and the water rose everywhere by about a metre and a half! We were worried for a while (and we played a lot of cards with our new friend Simon and watch many DVDs) but then just as fast as it started the rain stopped. But not before we had to get into a longboat and make a very long and very wet journey for 45 minutes to get to Clearwater Cave and Wind Cave. It was worth it, they were awesome!
Mulu also has the world's longest canopy walk which was pretty cool but unfortunately we didn't see much in the way of wildlife - just lots of cool creepy crawlies.
